...And I realize I haven't been around for months and months, partly because I'm not sure anyone actually bothers reading this anymore, partly because real life got in the way. But I haven't really properly written about music in a very long time so what better way to jump back into it than with my top twenty for the year? However, as usual, I'm terrible at motivating myself when I don't set a strict deadline so here it is: twenty albums in twenty days. I figure sticking to that schedule will a. force me to stop obsessing over albums I have not heard that I may or may not fall in love with before January, b. keep me from procrastinating until halfway through next year and c. make my verbosity less overwhelming for anyone who might still check in here. The best part is that since I've been so absent, I've really only talked about one of these albums in depth - so almost everything is completely new, yay!

Anyway, before I get to that list, let's get the albums that didn't make it out of the way. Here are thirteen songs from albums that were just okay, albums that kind of sucked apart from a song or two and EP/single releases that stuck with me throughout the course of the year. Tomorrow, I will start the countdown. (Also, if you like these posts and want to leave me a quick comment that would be fantastic as I really do appreciate even the smallest thanks.)

I honestly don't mean to keep abandoning this place. It just happens. But in an effort to keep things more active, I'm going to try really hard to post one song every day from the albums I've liked the most this year, since I haven't had a chance to talk about any new releases yet. Hopefully, I will be able to keep this promise, as it seems a pretty simple one to fulfill, seems being the operative word there - I'm still the biggest procrastinator on the planet. Anyway, that will start tomorrow. For now, have a concert review that, yes, I shamelessly copied and pasted from my personal blog. Whatever. It fits more here.

There's kids playing guns in the street and one's pointing his tree branch at me and so I put my hands up, I say enough is enough, if you walk away, I'll walk away, and he shot me dead. )

Also, before I go, there's a new Carissa's Wierd song, guys! Their first in over seven years! I guess they're planning on releasing a 7" and doing a few reunion shows but I'm not sure if their plans yet extend beyond that. Hopefully, they do because this song is beautiful and sounds just as good as their best stuff. You can hear it over on Soundcloud.

This is the only song I really love by Owen Pallett right now but I adore it. There's just something about it that I can't really explain but it grabbed me from my first listen. I think part of the reason I love it so is that the lyrics are rather brilliant, in my opinion. I mean, he actually utters the line "I've a temper as shiny as any bling" and pulls it off - despite the fact that "bling" is such a ridiculous word. But my favorite moments are near the end. First, the "The crack/Where is the crack?/When did I crack?" bit because it is so simple but so emotional. And then the final part - "Then I'll stand alone on a planet with/Nothing left to remember it"; it's so perfectly restrained yet intense that it gives me chills. Good stuff.

I'm 99% sure I've posted this before but it's such a great song that it deserves another mention. I think everyone should hear this song. It's just beautiful. Depressing but beautiful (isn't that so often the case?).

More beauty. I don't really listen to them much anymore these days but this song still always manages to impress me.

Here are a few random songs/artists I am loving at the moment. No *NSYNC this time, I promise. ;)

And also, because I'm feeling generous and because no one is really getting anything out of me keeping them to myself, here are links to some random things I have uploaded in my MediaFire folder - a few albums, some songs. They are all good, I promise, so download whatever you'd like! Remember to change xx to tt for the links to work.

I've been kind of non-existent here lately, I know, at least compared to the rate that I used to post, but here's a little something to make up for that. I've been wanting to make a new mix lately but had absolutely no ideas for it. Between that and trying to think of something - anything! - to post about, this one was born. The seed was planted last night when my Zune decided to play me "Get Big" and "Warrior" back-to-back and I thought it sounded quite nice, so then I kept thinking about other songs that would work with those two. There is really no hugely obvious theme this time... I guess just that all of the songs are kind of dark and moody and sad, different aspects of depressing, I suppose. And basically I just think they all sound good together and they're mostly songs that I've been obsessed with lately. I think there are only two that I've posted previously, so that's a plus. And I just have to say, I'm the kind of person who feels like it's wasteful to not use the entire 80 minutes of a blank CD, so it was extremely hard for me not to try and fill up the last twenty or so that remain with this. But there are really no other songs I felt the need to add and I was afraid that any half-hearted inclusions would disrupt the entire thing, so I left it be. Also, there is really no reason for the two parts, just me being pretentious, I guess. (And yes, I realize that Orenda Fink is technically on the CD three times which I generally try not to do but whatever...)

I'm landing now, forgetting how. Your gravity ruins everything. )

I'm too lazy to work on any reviews at the moment, so here are some random songs I love right now instead. Actually, they're not random at all - they're all those boy/girl bands that I so adore. Someone stop me! I literally cannot listen to anything else anymore. It's like an illness or something, but one that I definitely don't mind having.

Since I posted about them a couple of weeks ago, I've decided that I actually enjoy Your Majesty a lot. It's nearly the complete opposite of their first album but I've found that after hearing it a few times, I actually like almost every song and it's very hard to decide which is my very favorite. Maybe "Husam Husam" or "Devil on My Side" which I've already posted (check the tag). Or maybe this one, if only for the vocal harmonies during the "I wear this crooked crown... raise the dead, oh-oh-oh" part of the second verse, because Adrienne just sounds perfect there. Whether or not it's my favorite, it's still very good.

I have posted quite a few of their songs, but I've never actually talked about them specifically, just random songs that happened to go with a theme I was doing. But they are (or were... yet another great band who broke up) awesome and deserve to be mentioned more. I actually haven't even made myself familiar with a good portion of their material yet, but I adore what I have been able to digest. This song is very catchy, in a kind of melancholy way, if you get what I mean. I liked it before but I heard it on shuffle the other day and thought, "Damn, that's a good song", and have been listening to it a lot since.

I'm not sure how much I like this band yet, but this song anyway is stellar. The chorus is amazing and then the overlapping alternating melodies at the end - I love that. Also, the girl in this band is named Shannon which, if you don't know, is my name so that automatically makes them cool in my book.

I know, I know, I've already posted about them a lot, but I keep realizing new songs that I love. This one, for example - it was actually one of my least favorites on The Needles, the Space for a very long time; my sister kept telling me how much she loved it and I couldn't understand the appeal, I thought it was boring. But I've been listening to them all the time lately and it's finally clicked and now I think it's beautiful. I love the lyrics and how naturally and slowly it builds up and, of course, the vocal harmonies. Though those kind of make me sad now that Michelle has left the band and won't be there to provide them anymore. But not sad enough to stop listening.

Seriously, if anyone knows any other bands like those and Lydia, 1997, Tilly and the Wall, Mates of State, Los Campesinos!, etc. that do the shared male/female vocals thing, please let me know because I'm addicted and I think I've exhausted all my knowledge.

So, in honor of last night's Oscars ceremony - which I surprisingly thought were decently interesting this year - here are a handful of songs that work well for the occasion.

First, a few that go hand-in-hand with some of the winners (all very deserving, in my opinion):

And here are a few that have a general actor/movie theme to them:

Enjoy! :)

I haven't posted any covers in awhile, so here are a few really good ones that I've discovered since... whenever the last time I posted any was. (I think it was that big 5-part covers extravaganza which was pretty close to when I first started posting, so awhile ago.)

Guess what? I finally got another mix done! And in time for Valentine's Day, too! Now, I don't really care about the holiday one way or another, but the general theme of this is "sappy love songs" so it's appropriate to post it at this time. It covers a pretty broad range, since I could only get so far with the 100% in love songs so some are sarcastically romantic ("Fucking Boyfriend", "Marry Me"), some are depressingly romantic ("I Know I Know I Know", "My Invitation", "I Know"), some were chosen simply because their titles seemed to fit (any of them with "heart" or "valentine" in the title), and the rest of them are pure, unabashedly sugary, head-over-heels-in-love songs. So, whether you're going to bask in a lonely depression or spend some time with a special someone, I hope you enjoy this!

The idea for this mix was spurred by my current Stars obsession but my weakness for boy/girl duos started around the time that I first got into Tilly and the Wall and Mates of State, probably a year or more ago now. It's great to find a really unique and affecting male or female voice but to me, it's even more powerful when you put them together. So that's the idea behind this mix and it's definitely my favorite so far. I think the songs flow really well and they're all just awesome songs, to put it simply. Three things I feel like you should know:

  1. The song the title is from (Ingrid Michaelson's "Breakable") is not on the mix because, well, it's not a boy/girl song. I'm just not smart enough to think up a witty title on my own so all I could think of was this and "Scream loud, all you girls and boys" from Tilly and the Wall's "Nights of the Living Dead". I figured there was less screaming and more vulnerability/sadness on it overall, therefore I went with this title.
  2. I really dislike Johnathan Rice's music and the song on here is the only one I can stand, mostly due to the presence of Jenny Lewis' lovely voice. I don't know why I feel the need to say this; I guess to justify to myself that it's okay to have him on here or something, ha.
  3. The Slow Club song is kind of low quality since it's just a MySpace rip and the single containing it is only available in 7" format right now but I love it so much that I used it anyway. It's not completely unlistenable, just a bit tinny compared to everything else.
Okay, there's that, now to the music! Oh, in case you don't keep up with the introductory post thing, I'm starting to post all links as hxxp instead of http, to keep them safer or something I guess, so just make sure to change that part when you open one.

We are a pair of apples. )

Apparently, my last mix got downloaded more than 20 times yet I got no comments on that post. Don't get me wrong, I love that so many people have found their way here and a comment isn't required, but it is much appreciated, even just a few words. By the way, if anyone knows of any similar bands, let me know because I seriously can't get enough of the boy/girl thing!
