urgencytobleed: (mindy and leighton are so cute)

Here are a few random songs/artists I am loving at the moment. No *NSYNC this time, I promise. ;)

I adore Fiona completely but I don't really listen to her very often anymore. However, every once in awhile, I'll get this immense urge to listen to her records again and it'll just reconfirm her genius even more. All of her songs, for the most part, are truly amazing and I've posted most of my very favorites in the past, but not this one. I love this song because it's so simple yet so emotionally layered at the same time, just in a really nuanced way. And, as always, the lyrics are to die for; the entire thing is brilliant but the second verse especially always gets to me: "And I went crazy again today, looking for a strand to climb, looking for a little hope/Baby said he couldn't stay, wouldn't put his lips to mine, and a fail to kiss is a fail to cope/I said, 'Honey, I don't feel so good, don't feel justified, come on, put a little love here in my void'/He said, 'It's all in your head,' and I said, 'So's everything,' but he didn't get it/I thought he was a man but he was just a little boy." Ahh, it's just... perfection. And the video is undeniably adorable as well. The only thing I wish I could change about Fiona is how often she releases new material because it's not nearly often enough.

Joanna is another one of those artists I haven't listened to much lately but still love a whole lot. I'll admit that sometimes her voice pre-Ys is slightly hard to handle, even though I've grown used to it by now, but it just fits the quirkiness of this song so perfectly. And if you can't appreciate her vocals, you can at least appreciate her songwriting which is always amazing. The lyrics to this song are just so fun and clever. I could honestly quote the entire thing (which turns out to be the case with me when it comes to any of her songs). But I guess if I had to pick a favorite part it would be, "Advice from the master derailed that disaster/He said, 'Hand that pen over to me, poetaster!'" It's just so... essentially Joanna. While we're talking about new material, I think it's about time she released a new album as well.

New Asobi Seksu song! I've been kind of into them for awhile but didn't really fall completely in love until a few months ago and now I love nearly every minute of Citrus. I've been slightly concerned that they won't be able to live up to it with their next release but this song has given me pretty high hopes. It's definitely quite poppy and energetic but I for one enjoy that side of their music a lot ("Goodbye" anyone? it's possibly my favorite song of theirs - or at least in the top three). And it's very clean and concise while still retaining that shoegaze-y, dreamlike quality. Plus, Yuki's voice sounds better than ever. Their new album comes out in February, I believe, so that's something to look forward to already next year.

Don't you love that feeling of hearing a song totally randomly and falling in love with it? In the case of this song, it was from some random mix that I downloaded and the first time I listened, during the first half I thought, "Eh, this is pretty good but not great" and by the end I thought, "Holy shit, this is amazing" and proceeded to listen to it on repeat. I haven't actually listened to anything else by them yet but if the rest is anywhere near as good as this song, I think I have found a new band to obsess over for awhile - and to think, I probably would have never explicitly sought them out on my own. Anyway, yes, the song is awesome; between the group vocals at the end and all the stomping and clapping, I'm basically destined to love it, right? It also continues the trend that apparently all songs with this title are great - now I know of three absolutely perfect "I Know"s and one pretty good one. Interesting...

I'm still kind of angry with them about their unnecessary name change. Really, does adding a "the" and a space really make their name any less stupid than it already is? No. But anyway, I was also kind of lukewarm on their new album at first but I'm coming around to it and there are a handful of songs that I just can't get enough of, this being one of them. It's just so... awesome! I love Morgan's vocals, I love the whole kind of creepy and sinister atmosphere of it, and the build-up from the sparse beginning to the loud ending is just so perfectly executed. So I guess I can accept their silly name change as long as they keep making music as good as this.

I've tried to get into their first album a few times now and have never been able to, but I felt like I should enjoy them so I downloaded their new album (or albums, I guess) and heard a lot of the songs through shuffle first and found them very good, so I guess I'm a fan now. The thing is most of their songs are really quite great but I feel like they're lacking somehow... like they should be a little more energetic and upbeat but they never quite reach that point or something. And also, their lyrics can sometimes be rather terrible. But anyway, despite those slight complaints, they are rather good and this song especially I love a whole lot.

And also, because I'm feeling generous and because no one is really getting anything out of me keeping them to myself, here are links to some random things I have uploaded in my MediaFire folder - a few albums, some songs. They are all good, I promise, so download whatever you'd like! Remember to change xx to tt for the links to work.
