Song of the Day!

Bright Eyes - Drunk Kid Catholic

LYRICS )

I've been trying to listen through all of the Bright Eyes songs I have that I haven't touched yet and this one has been a highlight. At first, I thought it sounded nice but wasn't particularly special but then the last part caught me off guard ("They crawl from the oceans/To paint in the caves/But I'm working all weekend/I need to get paid") and I thought it was really awesome. Most of Conor's songs have depressing music to go with the depressing lyrics but the melody of this is very sing-songy, almost like a children's song or something, which I think is why I was so surprised by the ending that first time - it sounds so cheerful but it's obviously not if you know Bright Eyes. I also like the employment of a few different vocalists - Conor sings the first two parts and the next one is apparently sung by Todd Fink of the Faint and then for good measure, one or two female vocalists are added to the mix (I could speculate on who that is but I'd probably be wrong and I don't have a reliable source to refer to).

The idea for this mix was spurred by my current Stars obsession but my weakness for boy/girl duos started around the time that I first got into Tilly and the Wall and Mates of State, probably a year or more ago now. It's great to find a really unique and affecting male or female voice but to me, it's even more powerful when you put them together. So that's the idea behind this mix and it's definitely my favorite so far. I think the songs flow really well and they're all just awesome songs, to put it simply. Three things I feel like you should know:

  1. The song the title is from (Ingrid Michaelson's "Breakable") is not on the mix because, well, it's not a boy/girl song. I'm just not smart enough to think up a witty title on my own so all I could think of was this and "Scream loud, all you girls and boys" from Tilly and the Wall's "Nights of the Living Dead". I figured there was less screaming and more vulnerability/sadness on it overall, therefore I went with this title.
  2. I really dislike Johnathan Rice's music and the song on here is the only one I can stand, mostly due to the presence of Jenny Lewis' lovely voice. I don't know why I feel the need to say this; I guess to justify to myself that it's okay to have him on here or something, ha.
  3. The Slow Club song is kind of low quality since it's just a MySpace rip and the single containing it is only available in 7" format right now but I love it so much that I used it anyway. It's not completely unlistenable, just a bit tinny compared to everything else.
Okay, there's that, now to the music! Oh, in case you don't keep up with the introductory post thing, I'm starting to post all links as hxxp instead of http, to keep them safer or something I guess, so just make sure to change that part when you open one.

Apparently, my last mix got downloaded more than 20 times yet I got no comments on that post. Don't get me wrong, I love that so many people have found their way here and a comment isn't required, but it is much appreciated, even just a few words. By the way, if anyone knows of any similar bands, let me know because I seriously can't get enough of the boy/girl thing!

So, the past few days, I've been working on making a mix of songs that are extremely personal to me and I think I've finally got it as good as it'll get. This is different from my usual themed playlists because I tried to make it as if it's an actual mix CD, so it's about 80 minutes worth of music and I tried to organize the songs in a way that made sense thematically and sounded good. I'm no expert at that, though. Since it's meant to be listened to in a specific order, I've uploaded the whole thing as a ZIP file but seeing as I've posted quite a few of these songs in the past, I've also uploaded them all individually if you prefer that. The only difference is that the ZIP contains an instrumental song as the first track because I think it works well as an intro. I didn't upload that one on its own because it's not as important as the other tracks plus it's a Shannon Wright song and I've had stuff by her reported and removed from my Box.net account in the past and didn't want to risk it again. Most of these songs are terribly depressing, so it goes... it seems to be easier to find songs that describe me when I'm depressed than when I'm happy. Alright, enough talk. Below the cut are links to each individual song as well as relevant lyrics from them and below that is the link to download the entire mix. Enjoy! (Oh yeah... I promise it's a complete coincidence that two of the songs have nearly identical titles.)

I'm ready to go... )

I haven't posted any themed playlists in a couple weeks and I have about half a dozen waiting for me to get around to, so there'll be some new ones over the next few entries. I tend to think of really random ideas suddenly and this was one of those out-of-nowhere ones: song titles that mention "royalty" aka anything with the word king, queen, prince, or princess. There were actually less than I thought there would be but I cut the list down to twelve really awesome songs - seriously, all of them except two I've rated five stars in Windows Media Player (and the other two are at four). So, for your listening pleasure, twelve songs about the royal family, rulers of the kingdom, etc, etc.

The number of songs left is dwindling, so there'll most likely only be one more post after this to complete the theme. As for this post, today's chosen colors are gold and silver.

I didn't mean for it to be so long between the first installment and this one, but I somehow got caught up with other things and didn't get around to it until now. Anyway, here it is, part two consisting of blue and red songs, below the cut.

Song of the Day!

Bright Eyes - A Song to Pass the Time

LYRICS )

I think this song is very underrated in the Bright Eyes catalogue as a whole. At least, I never see much mention of it anywhere. It's one of the less angsty songs on Fevers and Mirrors, so it took me awhile to really notice it, but it's so simple and beautiful and sad. I love the lo-fi "I recorded this in my bedroom" sound and the tiny barely noticeable additions that actually add a lot to the song, such as the child-like toy piano in the background and the faint sound of someone laughing after the line, "they'll be laughing." And as is usually the case with Conor, the lyrics are excellent as well.

I was given the suggestion to gather songs with a sun and moon theme, so I decided to act on it and was surprised by how many songs I had that fit the bill. There were way too many originally for me to upload in a reasonable amount of time, so I cut it down to twelve for each category. A lot of these are among my very favorite songs, so enjoy.

Fruit!

Today's theme is songs with names of fruits in the titles - silly, I know, but I suddenly thought of the idea a few days ago (probably because I wanted an excuse to post more Hush Sound songs and they have one that fits the category) and started searching through my music library. I didn't really find that many, though I might have missed a few because I did it at around three or four in the morning, but here are the wonderful fruity selections I did find...

Well, after lots of painful decisions about which ones should stay and which ones should go, I'm down to 50 various awesome cover songs and it's become impossible for me to whittle it down anymore. Therefore, I'll be making five posts with ten songs each over the next week, just to keep from totally overwhelming myself and anyone reading with a ton of songs (and probably long descriptions) all at once. You'll find a little bit of everything - the serious and not so serious, completely altered and barely changed, even a couple of my "guilty pleasure" artists thrown in. I'll be honest, I haven't heard the original versions for a majority of them, but that aside, they're all great songs by my standards. And I tried to keep it down to one or two per artist, but some are just so good at covers that I couldn't help but include quite a few. So, with that said, here are the first ten! (Oh, and the original artist is in parentheses, if you feel like tracking down those versions or anything.)

Well, since it's just past midnight now, part two is coming either Tuesday or later today if I get bored (which I probably will).
