urgencytobleed: (ellen page snl cupped face)
There have been quite a few new albums recently that have caught my ear, but not enough for me to write a full review on; plus, I'm just a bit burnt out on writing lengthy reviews right now in general. But I'm trying to keep better track of which albums I like the most so that it's easier to compile a list at the end of the year so I'm going to post some mini-reviews every so often, a little paragraph summarizing the album and a few of my favorite songs from it. There won't be any kind of schedule to them, just whenever I find another album to write about and get around to actually doing so. However, there are a handful that I already have planned to write about; I just have to give them some more listening time first. So look for a few more of these posts in the coming weeks. Here are the first two.

Be Your Own Pet

Get Awkward

This album didn't leave an impact at all initially but the more I hear the songs, the more I like them, and I've decided that it is pretty good. Their sound has gotten less harsh but is still insanely energetic and fun. Sure, the lyrics are obnoxious and immature, Jemina's vocals are bratty, and the songs are quite similar (though there is more variety than on their debut) - come on, those things are what make them so awesome! It's unfortunate that three songs were cut from the US release for being "too violent" (stupidest excuse I've ever heard), especially considering one - "Becky" - is among the album's finest moments. Sample lyrics: "Now I'm going to juvie for teenage homicide/It would all have been cool if you'd stayed by my side/Then you know Becky wouldn't have had to die/And now every single night I cry/If only what you wrote in my yearbook was true/Then I wouldn't be stuck in fuckin' cell block two/But I don't regret what I've done/'Cause in the end it was fun!" Quite morbidly brilliant, if I do say so myself.

Blood Red Shoes

Box of Secrets

I kind of forgot about this band for awhile but their debut full-length is definitely enjoyable. It's nothing too surprising if you've heard their singles and last year's EP; the same sound, just a bit more polished. Their songs have heavy garage rock/punk influences but they also have a lot of pop sensibilities and catchy hooks, which is what makes them memorable. And of course, I love the multitude of girl/boy vocals, handclaps a plenty, and shout-along choruses. It's all pretty impressive when you think about the fact that they are only a duo. I still can't quite figure out why the actual title track is nowhere to be found, though. Hmm... (If you're curious, it does appear on the aforementioned I'll Be Your Eyes EP.) Oh, and this doesn't actually come out officially until next week but I figured it was close enough to post about anyway.

It's shocking, I know, but I've actually got this done less than a week after the last mix. Unlike my first girl/boy mix, where I had a bit of trouble filling an entire 80 minutes, with this one, I had too much music to choose from. I've discovered a lot of these types of bands in the last few months and of course there are always the old favorites as well, so I had to figure out a way to work both of those groups in. As painful as it was, I decided to mostly go with new stuff and had to cut out a few of those standbys (Rilo Kiley, Tilly and the Wall, etc.) until I ended up with only four artists that were on the previous mix and I couldn't make myself take out any others from there. I'm pretty happy with the results, though. There are probably about two songs that I would want to replace with something else but it's a bit hard now that I've got them all in a nice order and everything, so it works as is. I don't know if anyone actually downloads and listens to the entire mix in order, but if you do, my favorite transition is from "Midnight Coward" to "Why So Looking Back". It was kind of accidental because I was going to do "Why So Looking Back" after "So Many Ways" but it didn't sound very smooth, so I randomly chose another song to try between the two and it ended up fitting perfectly. Anyway, enough talk, on to the music. There's a lot of bands here that I've never posted about before so I hope you find something new to like!

Oh no! I was supposed to post this yesterday, but I'm a couple hours late. I'm sure no one will notice. :P Anyway, I've already developed quite a list of 2008 releases I'm looking forward to and for some unknown reason, I've been downloading almost every leak I've been able to find, even of artists I have never listened to previously. Hmm. I guess I just want to outdo my "up-to-date-ness" in 2007 with even more in 2008. It's yet to be seen how that actually works out as of all of those leaks I've downloaded, I've only listened to one or two completely so far. Anyway, onto the actual music! Some of these songs aren't 100% confirmed as being on their singers' upcoming albums but I tried to pick ones that were pretty likely. Also, I'm bound to only the music I have on hand as I don't want to be searching around for crappy live versions for ages, so this isn't nearly representative of everything I'm excited about. (You can see more of those after the downloads, but even that's most likely not close to a complete list.)

I've discovered/rediscovered a few bands lately, which has lead to me becoming pretty obsessed with them. Three bands, all with one thing in common: shared male/female vocals. I'm such a sucker for that, I don't know why - I guess I just like the way two totally different voices compliment each other so well when it seems like they shouldn't. Without further ado, I give you the music.
