urgencytobleed: (inside the one who holds you)
I know I haven't been posting very often lately - at least not very often by my standards, anyway. I guess I just haven't had much to talk about recently. The albums I'm still most anticipating this year have yet to come out and I haven't been making very many notable new discoveries. However, here are some songs that have caught my ear lately, some from new releases, some older. Enjoy. :)

The Grates

The Grates

The Grates are a highly energetic, insanely catchy trio hailing from Brisbane, Australia. Back in 2006, when their very good debut album - Gravity Won't Get You High - came out, I was extremely obsessed with this band for awhile, but by the time I started posting here, the obsession had waned and I haven't shared much of their music. But I still think they are awesome. I guess if comparisons have to be drawn, the easiest (and possibly laziest) ones to make are to bands like Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Be Your Own Pet, though the Grates are more poppy than both of them, more fun than YYYs, and less harsh than BYOP. Overall, their music is nothing terribly deep or life-altering, but it is tons of fun and sticks in your head for ages. Plus, frontwoman Patience Hodgson is perhaps the cutest, most adorable girl in the entire world - or at least in Australia. She has quite a voice on her as well and when it's called for, can belt it out with the best of them. And of course, there's that equally adorable Australian accent that just makes everything sound better.

Anyway, what propelled me to post about them now in the first place is that they have a brand new album due out in August called Teeth Lost Hearts Won and I just heard the single, "Burn Bridges", for the first time yesterday and as expected, it is terribly catchy and addicting. Patience's vocals are as charming as ever and as if that chorus isn't already perfection, there is also the added bonus of handclaps! Which everyone knows I love so this song is a complete winner in my book. Here is the video, which is quite odd and I'm not sure if I actually like it or not, but it sure is interesting, at least.

And, finally, here are a few of my favorite songs from Gravity Won't Get You High. They all come highly recommended, of course.

I haven't had any huge song or artist obsessions lately - shocking, I know. Well, I guess I have had a few, but they're all either things I've posted before or leaked albums and I've made kind of an unwritten rule that I'm not going to post songs until they're officially released. So, I haven't had much to post here because of that.

At first, I decided that I was going to upload and write about the first five songs that came up on shuffle, but then I kept getting a lot of live stuff and songs I don't necessarily love or don't have much to say about, so it's more like... the first five songs that come up on shuffle that I have the strongest feelings toward and are most worthy of posting.

I liked using a mixtape method so much last time that I think I'm going to continue using it for each of my future themed posts. It forces me to be choosy in my selection and seems more thoughtful and cohesive than simply a random group of songs. With my last one, I actually struggled to fill up an entire 80 minutes but it was the opposite with this mix. Because of the broad theme - songs featuring handclaps - there was a much larger selection of songs to choose from which meant I had to make quite a few painful cuts, especially in the final stages, when I would suddenly find a new song to fit in and had to trade another one for it or when I had to take out or replace some songs for the greater good of the overall sound. I tried to focus more on making all of the songs fit together musically than just choosing a bunch of my favorites, so for many of the artists included, the song I picked isn't necessarily my very favorite of their handclap-featuring songs but works better with all of the others. I specifically wanted to make this mix more upbeat and fun so there are only a few slower songs. Also, this compilation has a shocking amount of male vocals for my usual tastes - okay, it's still not a lot by normal standards, but it's a lot considering that I almost exclusively listen to females. Anyway, here are 22 lovely songs that will hopefully put a smile on your face and make you want to get up and dance. Same as last time, you can either download single tracks below the cut or download the whole mix, whichever works better for you.

It's such a crazy kick-ass beat. )

P.S. Does anyone know any good songs with any kind of group vocals in them? I did a post with some awhile ago but I want to revisit and expand on the theme and I'm running a bit short on songs. If you can think of any (and not ones that totally don't match with my music taste at all), let me know!

Here are my favorite, as I like to call them, "singalong" songs. Basically, any songs that have some sort of group vocals in the "hey, I just invited anyone who happened to be around to join in" vein. And hey, they're pretty fun for the listener to sing along to as well.
