The number of songs left is dwindling, so there'll most likely only be one more post after this to complete the theme. As for this post, today's chosen colors are gold and silver.
I didn't mean for it to be so long between the first installment and this one, but I somehow got caught up with other things and didn't get around to it until now. Anyway, here it is, part two consisting of blue and red songs, below the cut.
I've had a "colors" playlist sitting around on my computer forever so I decided I should finally get around to attacking it and picking out the best songs to post. After a few days of listening, I think the list is pretty much ready. Obviously, a theme like this has way too many tracks to post all at once, so I'll do it in a few installments. I'm not sure how many yet but this first one will get the less specific titles out of the way, as in titles containing just the word "color" and as an added bonus, I've thrown in a few "rainbow" songs as well. Sample/download the chosen ones below the cuts.
I thought it would be fun to find songs that had the same titles but were completely different songs and compare them to see which was best. This'll kind of be an on-going theme, not necessarily one right after the other, but a few little "battles" every now and then. Here are three of the best match-ups I could find, between songs that I really love, making it very hard to pick the best.
I think it would be really cool for people to leave a comment and tell me who your winners would be if you download them. Then we can get a nice debate going if you don't agree with me, of course, haha.
Usually songs that are less than two minutes don't do much for me. They're either over before they really have time to develop or are that short for a reason (because they aren't really worth the time in the first place). So, when I'm truly impressed by one of these songs, it's a pretty big deal. It also speaks well to the artist - that they can leave such a large impact in such a small amount of time. With this in mind, I set out on the task of finding the very best songs under two minutes in my possession. I started out with well over 300 but after weeding out dozens of meaningless thirty-second interludes, concert banter, and instrumentals (since I don't have many, I'm saving them as a theme possibility for the future) I began the pain-staking task of combing through the rest to narrow down my very favorites. The list slowly dwindled down to 50, then to 30, 25, and finally to its final stage where I couldn't possibly lose any more, 20. So, here it is: my top twenty favorite songs that don't quite reach two minutes - short and sweet and completely perfect that way.
I was given the suggestion to gather songs with a sun and moon theme, so I decided to act on it and was surprised by how many songs I had that fit the bill. There were way too many originally for me to upload in a reasonable amount of time, so I cut it down to twelve for each category. A lot of these are among my very favorite songs, so enjoy.
Today's theme is songs with names of fruits in the titles - silly, I know, but I suddenly thought of the idea a few days ago (probably because I wanted an excuse to post more Hush Sound songs and they have one that fits the category) and started searching through my music library. I didn't really find that many, though I might have missed a few because I did it at around three or four in the morning, but here are the wonderful fruity selections I did find...
I am a huge fan of Greek mythology and recently I've started trying to think of songs that make references to mythological stories, whether it be a passing mention or a song entirely based on one. Unfortunately, I couldn't find as many as I would've liked (it's a bit harder than finding a certain word in the title or something like that!), but here are most of them that I did come up with. From the looks of this list, it seems Tori Amos is the reigning queen of mythology in her songs. Apart from the four she has here, there were also two more possibilities that I decided not to include.
Well, here it is - the final part... for now. I've found or remembered way too many other great covers to leave them out completely so you can expect to see them at some point, just with a week or two break first. These last ten don't have much variety either, I must say, with one artist making up half of the songs - I just couldn't get rid of any more than that!
Well, here's part four - a bit late, but I still got it in without missing a day! Again, it's a bit lacking in variety, but I can't help it if each artist has more than one amazing cover. And I'm definitely going beyond the original five parts because I've discovered/remembered way too many more not to post them. Part five tomorrow!
Part three, woo-hoo! There isn't much variety here, I must admit, with three artists with more than one cover... but they're all so good so it doesn't matter.
Here's part two. And I was reminded by a little birdy about some songs I may have left out, so... there could possibly be a few more than originally intended tacked onto the end. Possibly.
Well, after lots of painful decisions about which ones should stay and which ones should go, I'm down to 50 various awesome cover songs and it's become impossible for me to whittle it down anymore. Therefore, I'll be making five posts with ten songs each over the next week, just to keep from totally overwhelming myself and anyone reading with a ton of songs (and probably long descriptions) all at once. You'll find a little bit of everything - the serious and not so serious, completely altered and barely changed, even a couple of my "guilty pleasure" artists thrown in. I'll be honest, I haven't heard the original versions for a majority of them, but that aside, they're all great songs by my standards. And I tried to keep it down to one or two per artist, but some are just so good at covers that I couldn't help but include quite a few. So, with that said, here are the first ten! (Oh, and the original artist is in parentheses, if you feel like tracking down those versions or anything.)
The latest theme over at pretty_music is "summer", so I guess this is somewhat of an extension on the summer portion of my seasons post, only not just limited to titles containing the word "summer". Actually, the first half are songs I've already posted here at some point, but the last four are new.
Here are my favorite, as I like to call them, "singalong" songs. Basically, any songs that have some sort of group vocals in the "hey, I just invited anyone who happened to be around to join in" vein. And hey, they're pretty fun for the listener to sing along to as well.
Well, here it is, the final part - months of the year. It's obviously a lot more songs than the other two and it took awhile to get through, but it kept me busy at least, since I'm always complaining about being bored. I also discovered a few artists and songs that I probably wouldn't have otherwise and that's always a plus. So, here's the massive collection of songs I ended up with, close to 30. Just as an excuse to post more, the first few songs reference a year in general and then they're divided up into the songs for each month.
Alright, here's part two of my little "project" - seasons. All of these songs feature one of the four seasons in their title, except for fall/autumn which didn't provide a plethora of really amazing songs (that I found, anyway) so for just that one, I went with songs that mention it in the lyrics instead. As always, every song comes highly recommended. I even discovered a new artist while doing this - the lovely Britta Persson - so that always makes things worth it. Here we are:
For a week or two now, I've been working on a three-part project to post here - song titles mentioning months, days, and seasons. I started out just planning to find a song for each month but it escalated into something much bigger very quickly. I've been listening to a lot of songs and painstakingly narrowing them down, from my own library and with a bit of help from the lovely people over at indie_exchange. Here's the first part - days of the week. I started out with a lot more songs but to save myself the pain of uploading them all, I managed to reduce them down to the very best for each day. And since it's Monday now, you can listen to the songs on their specified days! Or not. But they're all really good, I promise.
I know I promised this one like two weeks ago now, so it's long overdue and I apologize. I'm just such a procrastinator. Anyway, why this topic? Well, I noticed the last time I went shopping for CDs, everything I ended up getting (besides Patty at the show, of course) was on the lovely Saddle Creek records. And when I am not listening to artists on that label, I am most likely listening to someone closely related to it somehow. All of my favorite artists these days seem to be among this group, so it's only natural to post about them, right? I'm also including Team Love because, well, it's basically Saddle Creek's little sister and come on, I can't leave out a certain tap-dancing band and sexy indie chanteuse, can I? On to the music!
In related news, I found out today that Rilo Kiley's upcoming album is apparently titled Under the Blacklight and is set to be released August 20th in the UK and hopefully the day after or earlier in the US since it seems very odd to me that they would release it in the UK first. Oh well, none of that matters right now. All that matters is that we finally have some substantial information and now that it's officially set to come out, we should start getting more. I am terribly excited about this! Is it August yet?
P.S. - I also have a few other ideas for upcoming posts. Hopefully, they won't take as long to be realized as this one.
P.P.S. - Do you love my new Matthew Gray Gubler icon? I sure do. :D
