urgencytobleed: (bright star - he's mine bitch stay away)

Orenda Fink's second solo album, Ask the Night, is set for release on October 6th, and Saddle Creek has posted the first taste of it, "High Ground", up on its page at their store. I wasn't sure what to expect from this album as I've always enjoyed Maria Taylor's solo stuff more than Orenda's and her other release this year, the collaboration O+S, I found pretty forgettable apart from a few songs. I was instantly smitten with this new track, though, and I was mostly disappointed in Maria's newest album so let's hope the second half of Azure Ray can offer up a solid release this year. But with involvement from my musical boyfriend Andy LeMaster (Now It's Overhead) and the always lovely Adrianne Verhoeven (ex-The Anniversary and Art in Manila, another of Orenda's 3059825092 musical endeavors), I honestly don't see how it can go wrong. If you want to pre-order the album, make sure to do so through the Saddle Creek webstore - it'll be shipped two weeks earlier, which will actually already be next Tuesday! Awesome, right?

Well, being addicted to the Internet certainly has its advantages... here are a few songs from some upcoming releases that I've managed to stumble across recently for your listening pleasure. Also, they are all legal - I've decided it's probably a good idea for me to post officially released mp3s every now and then; to keep my conscience clean or something like that, you know? ;) Also, of course, it's less work for me when I don't have to upload them. Anyway:

The title track from Camera Obscura's upcoming fourth album - due out April 20th - pretty much picks up right where 2006's excellent Let's Get Out of This Country left off. It's one of those lovely little retro, slightly twee pop songs that they're so good at; it's got an instantly catchy melody, a gloriously lush wall of instrumentation, cutesy-sarcastic lyrics, and of course, Tracyanne Campbell's sugary sweet vocals to top things off. It's no "Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken" but it definitely bodes well for the remainder of the album. Stream the track on their official website or sign up for their mailing list to receive an mp3.
Colonia has already been released in Europe but won't premiere stateside until April 28th so if you're much more patient than I and have decided to hold out until then, here's another tantalizing little taste. This is probably one of the album's weaker tracks, in my opinion, but it's still very good. The string arrangements are gorgeous beyond belief and the chorus is strong and memorable but really, the only thing it needs to be excellent is Nina Perssen's vocals. She's got one of those voices that can pull off anything and make it sound amazing. Sign up for Stereogum's weekly newsletter, The 'Gum Drop, to download it.Honestly, I am not a fan of M. Ward at all for the most part but when Zooey Deschanel's involved he becomes about a million times more interesting to me. I just find him insanely boring on his own (sorry to anyone who likes him; I've tried, believe me). Anyway, this song is actually pretty catchy, has got handclaps (yes!), and - you saw it coming - the goddess Zooey Deschanel on backing vocals. I'll admit, she's the only reason I care about this. But maybe someone else is a fan of him so Hold Time comes out next Tuesday for those interested.
I've never seen a woman with as many different projects as Orenda Fink has; I don't know how she hasn't dropped dead from exhaustion at this point. O+S is her latest musical endeavor and is a collaboration with Scalpelist (aka Cedric LeMoyne of Remy Zero). What exactly makes this different from any of her past releases? Says LeMoyne, "We'd take samples of sounds of Haitian rituals, street noises or whatever, then cut them into loops. We'd arrange them into forms and write songs with them, or she might have started a song and I would take some of these sound materials to create bodies of music around it." Based on this description, I was expecting the songs to sound a lot more experimental than they actually are - really, well... they aren't extremely different from her past musical adventures. They're slightly more abstract and spacier and spookier but if you like her solo record or Azure Ray or Art In Manila, chances are you'll like this, too. Orenda's got another one of those voices - I could listen to her sing forever; her voice is so sultry yet so vulnerable at the same time. And these songs have lots of vocal layering which just makes it sound even more delicious. Anyway, apart from the above song, you can listen to three more at their MySpace. And she's not done yet - apparently she's also just finished a new solo record.

I've been kind of non-existent here lately, I know, at least compared to the rate that I used to post, but here's a little something to make up for that. I've been wanting to make a new mix lately but had absolutely no ideas for it. Between that and trying to think of something - anything! - to post about, this one was born. The seed was planted last night when my Zune decided to play me "Get Big" and "Warrior" back-to-back and I thought it sounded quite nice, so then I kept thinking about other songs that would work with those two. There is really no hugely obvious theme this time... I guess just that all of the songs are kind of dark and moody and sad, different aspects of depressing, I suppose. And basically I just think they all sound good together and they're mostly songs that I've been obsessed with lately. I think there are only two that I've posted previously, so that's a plus. And I just have to say, I'm the kind of person who feels like it's wasteful to not use the entire 80 minutes of a blank CD, so it was extremely hard for me not to try and fill up the last twenty or so that remain with this. But there are really no other songs I felt the need to add and I was afraid that any half-hearted inclusions would disrupt the entire thing, so I left it be. Also, there is really no reason for the two parts, just me being pretentious, I guess. (And yes, I realize that Orenda Fink is technically on the CD three times which I generally try not to do but whatever...)

I'm landing now, forgetting how. Your gravity ruins everything. )

Song(s) of the Day

Azure Ray - We Are Mice

LYRICS )

Orenda Fink - Bloodline

LYRICS )

I'm a bit weird, I think, because all of my favorite Azure Ray songs are Orenda's but I hardly ever feel like listening to her solo work while I adore Maria's.... hmm. Anyway, today is all about Orenda. I can't believe I've never posted "We Are Mice" before and so I'm fixing that right now. I actually thought the song was terribly boring the first few times I heard it but then it suddenly clicked and now it's one of my favorites. You have to be in the right mood for it because it is very slow and bleak and sad-sounding, but I adore the lyrics (the whole second verse is perfect) and Orenda sounds fantastic as always; I love when she goes into that deep, sensual, throaty voice like on the "We'll do our best to blend in" line, it's so spine-tingling and beautiful. And, while I don't completely love her solo stuff, there are a few songs that I go back to a lot and "Bloodline" is one of them. I posted it awhile ago but the link has since expired and I've been really into it lately. Musically, it's very catchy and upbeat, but the lyrics are quite dark which I didn't realize until I saw the semi-creepy music video for it, which puts them into context a lot better. My favorite part is "Just let your body do the rest" where she utilizes that side of her voice I mentioned before. Basically, they're both really good; click the song titles to listen/download if you haven't already figured it out.

Song of the Day!

Orenda Fink - Invisible Ones Guard the Gate

LYRICS )

One of my favorites from her album. The lilting almost nursery rhyme like melody contrasts with the very dark lyrics perfectly.

The latest theme over at [profile] pretty_music is "summer", so I guess this is somewhat of an extension on the summer portion of my seasons post, only not just limited to titles containing the word "summer". Actually, the first half are songs I've already posted here at some point, but the last four are new.

Orenda Fink

I have to admit, I've been ignoring one half of Azure Ray for the other, but it's about time I give Orenda the attention she deserves as well. Her only solo album, 2005's Invisible Ones, is quite a departure from her material with Azure Ray, where for the most part, her songs seemed to be the sleepier and more subdued of the duo. The album has a very tribal feel to it (in fact, according to her MySpace, the songs were inspired by trips to Haiti, Cambodia, and India where she was drawn to the spirituality and mythology of their cultures) with a healthy dose of slightly spooky chanting, throbbing and pulsing drum beats, and of course, the most important instrument - that sultry and soothing voice, plain yet distinctive, breathy yet strong. Overall, it veers in a more experimental (and, yes, more upbeat) direction, showing her strength and growth as a solo artist outside of her musical partnership with Maria Taylor.
